The new year is a time for reflection and renewal. While many of us focus on personal goals, it's important to assess our relationships in our personal reflection. Looking at our day-to-day habits and priorities can help determine what we want to work on in 2025. Healthy relationships are the cornerstone of a fulfilling life, and long-distance ones take extra time and effort to maintain. So let's dive into some uncomfortable, but necessary questions to ask yourself as you take stock this month:

  1. What do my ideal relationships look like in one year?

Consider what you want your relationships to look like one year from now. Do you envision deeper connections with your partner, stronger bonds with family, or more meaningful friendships?

  1. What important relationship lessons did I learn last year?

Reflect on past experiences, both positive and negative. What did you learn about yourself, others, and the dynamics of your relationships?

  1. Am I spending time with the right people?

Do your relationships bring you joy and support? Do they uplift you or drain your energy? Be honest with yourself about the quality of your relationships and the people you choose to surround yourself with. Are their relationships that bring you joy but you haven’t prioritized because of distance?

  1. What relationship habits held me back last year?

Were you overly critical? Did you neglect communication? Did you prioritize work over loved ones? Do you struggle on how to connect with loved ones from afar? Do you have long-distance friendships that you don’t cultivate throughout the year? Identifying these habits is the first step towards breaking free from them.

  1. Am I ready to let go of these negative relationship habits?

Change requires commitment and relationships require work. Are you truly ready to make the effort to break old patterns and cultivate healthier behaviors?

  1. What new relationship habits can I commit to in 2025?

Focus on positive actions: regular quality time; regularly connecting with long distance siblings, parents and grandparents; open and honest communication; active listening; showing appreciation; and prioritizing emotional intimacy.

  1. How can I simplify and improve my daily interactions with loved ones?

Are you constantly distracted by technology? Can you create dedicated "no-phone" zones or times for undivided attention? How are you staying connected with your loved ones that you cannot see in person more than once a year?

  1. What is one relationship skill I want to master in 2025?

Is it active listening, conflict resolution, expressing needs effectively, or building deeper trust? Choose one area to focus on and dedicate time and effort to improving it.

  1. How can I better manage my time to prioritize relationships?

Schedule dedicated time for loved ones, just as you would for work or other commitments. Make time for date nights, family dinners, and quality conversations. Can you add reminders in your calendar to reach out to someone new once a week. Create a schedule in which you connect with a long distance family member or friend once a quarter, until it becomes routine.

  1. Am I clear on my "why" when it comes to nurturing my relationships?

Understanding the underlying reasons for wanting strong relationships – love, companionship, support, joy – can fuel your motivation to prioritize them.

  1. What does success in my relationships mean to me in 2025?

Define success beyond superficial metrics. Is it about deeper intimacy, greater understanding, and a stronger sense of connection? What about finding ways to not just “catch up” with you college best friend, but create new shared experiences.

  1. What's that one thing I need to stop procrastinating on in my relationships?

Is it having that difficult conversation, addressing a long-standing issue, or simply showing more appreciation? Maybe it is as simple as sending the text or making the call, even when you’re concerned they are “too busy” to check in. Allow others to tell you that, don’t make assumptions.

  1. What's a small daily action that will significantly improve my relationships over time?

It could be a simple "thank you," a daily check-in with a loved one, or a conscious effort to listen without interrupting. Each day, think of one action to take that would better your relationships, near and far.

  1. What's one thing I can do to step out of my comfort zone in my relationships?

Try something new together, express your vulnerability, or initiate a deeper conversation.

  1. How can I give more value to others in 2025?

Focus on acts of service, emotional support, and genuine interest in the lives of those you care about.

By honestly confronting these questions, you can gain valuable insights into your relationships and create a roadmap for growth and fulfillment in the coming year. Remember, strong relationships require consistent effort and a willingness to learn and grow.
